PETA Sends ‘Bloody’, ‘Faeces’-Covered Sheep Clock to PM: ‘Time Is Ticking on Your Live-Export Promise’

Canberra – As he celebrates his 61st birthday, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a provocative gift: a clock in the shape of a sheep covered in “blood” and “faeces”. The clock is accompanied by a card reading, “Time Is Ticking on Your Live-Export Promise”, referring to the government’s election promise to phase out the live export of sheep and that Labor’s term in office may end in September 2025, when the next federal election is held. The message inside the card continues, “Animals spend their birthdays – and even their birth days – aboard filthy live-export ships. Please, give Australia a real reason to celebrate. End live export for all, for good.”

PETA has previously put the Albanese government on blast for dragging its feet on an election promise to ban the live export of sheep, and Labor’s continued support of the industry has recently come under fire again relating to the MV Bahijah live-export scandal, during which some 16,500 animals were left aboard a stranded live-export ship that was denied permission to enter Israel and returned to Fremantle, where it was docked during a heatwave.

“The Labor government has a chance to do the right thing and ban live export – not only for sheep but for all animals who suffer aboard these death ships,” says PETA Campaigns Advisor Mimi Bekhechi. “It has so far failed to implement even a watered-down version by sparing sheep this ordeal. Two thirds of Australians want to see a complete end to this disgraceful industry, and time is running out on Labor’s guaranteed term in office.”

Australians have grown increasingly vocal in their opposition to live export, but many don’t realise that buying wool supports this cruel industry. When their wool production slows, many sheep used for wool are forced onto live-export ships to be killed in other countries, often in ways that are illegal in Australia.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear or abuse in any other way” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.au and follow the group on Facebook and Instagram.
