Sydney – Champagne corks are popping at PETA following the news that UGG has released its first-ever vegan UGG boots. The launch is in collaboration with New York–based fashion brand Collina Strada, which crafted the animal-friendly shoes using sugarcane, TENCEL, and recycled polyester microfibre. The announcement follows years of pressure from PETA entities, which has included purchasing stock in UGG’s parent company to push it to go vegan, viral social media campaigns, a heartfelt plea from Pamela Anderson, a lively demonstration at an UGG anniversary party, and more than 30,000 e-mails from PETA entities’ supporters.

“The future of fashion is animal-free, and UGG’s new vegan boots are a step in the right direction. Made without wool, they’ll help spare sheep violent shearing, egregious abuse, and a horrible death at the abattoir,” says PETA Senior Policy Advisor Mimi Bekhechi. “PETA would love to see Aussie-owned Ugg companies make all their footwear animal-friendly.”
PETA entities have released seven exposés of facilities in Australia’s wool industry, and abuse was documented at all the 40-plus farms and shearing sheds visited around the country. Eyewitnesses have filmed shearers beating sheep with clippers, punching and throwing them, and standing on their necks. Once their wool production declines, sheep are deemed useless by the industry and sold for mutton – or into Australia’s controversial live-export trade.
